Tromebone Shorty - Nov. 17th Toronto [this guy is good]

When I was graduating from the UoW in 1987, Troy Andrews was born. TS is 25 yrs old. There is no doubt in my mind, he will soon be put in the ranks of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herb Albert, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins and others. His style is beautifully unique. Excitingly refreshing. It's Jazz, Funk and Heavy Rock. At 11pm Tromebone Shorty hit the stage to a mix of young and old, bouncing at the Opera House on Queen St. East. A seven piece New Orleans band with saavy spunk. TS played a good selection from his latest cd, "For
True". I first learned about TS by seeing him appear on the Conan show as muscial guest. I was hooked. Along with Tomebone, TS plays trumpet. At one point about a third into the set he blew into the trumpet and held it without breath which went on forever,(between a minute & two), near the end of holding his breath, I thought his eyes were going to shoot out of his sockets. You cannot but help bounce to his music. This guy is good. My wife and I were smacked against the stage capitivated by entire bands performance. I was surprised to see so many University guys and ladies right into it. As well to the other extreme there was certainly your more elegant, mature Toronto Jazz representative too. Tromebone Shorty as his name implies is bout 5'-7' maybe 125 lbs soaking wet. Hi s energy level is explosive. I cannot imagine anyone saying that they were disappointed by this concert. Keep your ears open ; you're going to be hearing more from Tromebone Shorty.
